As a carer you have the right to ask for a carer’s assessment. This will look at the impact your caring responsibilities have on your life and what social care support you might be eligible for.

Direct payments for carers
Direct payments for carers are designed to support carers in different aspects of their lives, and to help ease some of the extra pressures arising from their caring role.
In order to qualify for one of these payments, carers will need to have a carer’s assessment or review undertaken by the council that has identified an unmet eligible need.

Parent carers
If you are a parent looking after a disabled child and you have Parental Responsibility for that child, we would consider you a parent carer.
You can have a Parent Carer Needs Assessment and if are considered eligible we will look at what support we can give you.
Accessible living- community equipment/aids and adaptations disabled facilities grant
You could get a grant from the council if you’re disabled and need to make changes to your home, for example to:
- widen doors and install ramps
- improve access to rooms and facilities – e.g. stairlifts or a downstairs bathroom
- provide a heating system suitable for your needs
- adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use.

Social Prescribing
A social prescriber can help you with a wide range of social, emotional or practical needs, focused on improving your mental and physical wellbeing.
They can provide advice and connect you with groups in your community. Examples include volunteering, arts activities, group learning, gardening, befriending, cookery, healthy eating advice and a range of sports.
If you think you might find this advice useful, please speak to your GP surgery.
Fire safety home visit
A Safe and Well Visit is a free service provided by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service to eligible residents. Safe and Well visits are tailored to individual needs, relating to health and wellbeing, as well as fire risk reduction.
Asian Carers Group
• Provides opportunity for carers to get together once a month.
• Runs a referral service.
• Advice and information to carers, physically disabled people, women and ethnic minorities.
• Activities and outings.
Meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of every month at 11:30am – 12:30pm at Slough Hindu Temple.

Cippenham Carers Group
We provide information for carers on what they need to know about their caring roles and what help is out there for them. We get together every 3rd Wednesday of the month and have chair exercise, tea or coffee and sandwiches. It’s respite for them for 2 hours, it brightens their day and they meet other carers doing the same jobs to exchange experiences.
Meet new people over a cup of tea and seated exercises at Cippenham Carers Group, every 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 1pm-3pm, at the Cippenham Baptist Church.
Tea with TAG
Parent Support Groups in Slough, term-time. A time to meet and socialise with other parent-carers of Autistic Children (diagnosed, pre-assessment, wondering). All are welcome.
Community Connect
A three-year initiative designed to support carers, adults, people with disabilities, and anyone feeling isolated. Run by Crossroads Care Slough, the project offers:
- Free fish and chip lunches
- Live entertainment
- Friendship, connection, and laughter
It’s a warm and welcoming space where people come together, relax, and feel seen.
Tea/ coffee/ soft drink and snacks.
Special Voices
We understand the challenges that parents and carers of children with additional needs face every day. That’s why we host regular Coffee Days, providing a warm, welcoming, and informal space where families can come together to share experiences, seek advice, and enjoy a friendly chat over a cup of tea or coffee.
These gatherings are more than just a coffee break—they are a chance to build connections, gain valuable insights, and have your voice heard.

Slough Young Carers
We offer a range of activities and support, from health and wellbeing to education as well as activities to enjoy life outside of a young persons caring role.
